" width="160" height="240" />New multiple streams entrepreneurs often feel they must wait for an income stream to start producing before they begin to create another source of income. The truth is that you can hop from stream to stream, constantly building new assets, as long as you have a solid plan in place for monetizing the streams you’ve already created.

I like to use the power of momentum to build additional assets. For me, this works best when I move from a freshly completed project to one that is somewhat related. That way, the knowledge and research I did for the first project can be applied to the second, saving time and preserving momentum.

If I write a book that will be sold as a print book, I don’t close the file until I’ve also created an e-book version. I might also decide to create an audio version, or excerpt bits to submit as magazine articles. Each of these things provides an additional income stream at little extra effort.

You might want to read more about the power of momentum in a guest post on Leo Babauta’s Zen Habits blog. Katie Tallo of Momentum Gathering has written lyrically about momentum and its power to transform, propel, and support all you do. The key to benefitting from momentum is to just get going and do something!

Successful entrepreneurs don't waste time whining about what might have been, or talking about what they're going to do someday. Successful people do what they need to do; whiners talk about it.

I’ve always told my boys that if they want to live a happy life, they need to “do and be; don’t sit and stare.” One of the most interesting things I’ve noticed about entrepreneurs who have successfully created multiple streams of income is that they believe in doing and being. They don’t waste time talking about what they plan to do; they just do it. There’s definitely no whining when they talk about their business(es). They don’t talk about:

What they’ll do when they have more time

What they’ll do when they have more money

What they meant to do, but couldn’t for some reason

What someone else did that they could have done better

What someone else could only have done if they had an advantage

Why they didn’t do what they promised to do

Instead, successful individuals understand that action is what counts. Whining about “what might have been” is a complete waste of time. Talking about something you mean to do and haven’t yet done is a waste of time. In many cases, time is all you have to from which to create a stream of income, so wasting it on talk is a very bad idea.

Instead, the only reasonable thing for an entrepreneur to do is to move forward and create another stream of income. While the whiners are explaining why they haven’t done anything, you can be quietly creating something new. Action pays dividends, so DO, don’t talk!

Income Stream: Any amount of money that flows to you from any source... It's surprising what you can accomplish once an idea has been planted!

Income Stream: Any amount of money that flows to you from any source. Your salary may be one stream; the firewood you cut and sell is another stream. Other streams might be interest on your savings account, money you earn from selling something you make, money earned by providing a service, or money you receive from renting property or running ads on your website. Streams can come from anywhere, and they can all come to you.

The first time I heard the term “multiple streams of income” was in a bookstore sometime around 2000. There was a display of bright silver books titled Multiple Streams of Income: How to Generate a Lifetime of Unlimited Wealth by Robert G. Allen. I picked one up, intrigued, and browsed through it, but found many of the suggested streams– stock strategies, real estate ideas, and network marketing– unappealing, so I didn’t buy it.

The idea stayed with me, though, and I started looking for ways to add additional streams of income to our household. I was deep into educating our four sons and caregiving for my elderly grandmother, so I didn’t have a lot of time to devote to the ideas that surfaced, but gradually, more streams began to trickle in, and my personal, purposeful multiple streams career was born. It’s surprising what you can accomplish once an idea has been planted!

Establish multiple streams of income from home to follow the tortoise's path to financial stability.

Remember the story of the tortoise and the hare? The speedy hare was so confident that he could beat the tortoise that he took a nap while the patient tortoise ambled to the finish line. I think of that story often as I hear of different get-rich-quick schemes, many of them based on very good ideas (the hare was a really fast rabbit, too, but he didn’t win).

Although some get rich quick plans work if you apply the right blend of knowledge, diligence, and perhaps a bit of luck, it’s far easier to take the tortoise’s path to financial comfort. Rather than looking for the perfect idea that will catapult you into a six-figure income within a few weeks, it’s a lot more practical to establish multiple streams of income that can provide a solid financial base for raising a family, supporting an artistic or missions-oriented career, getting debt-free, or just being financially comfortable now and in retirement.

This blog will be about building multiple streams of income from home. I’ve been answering questions about how to do this for many years, so I hope to share a lot of what I’ve learned here. If you have specific questions, feel free to leave a comment below. Remember to subscribe to the RSS feed so you don’t miss any helpful how-to’s!
